In Korean pop culture, one of the most common ways to describe a face isn't "pretty" or "handsome" but an animal: dog face, cat face, fox face. The vocabulary started in idol fandoms and spread until it's now ordinary conversation. This guide explains the system, the features behind each type, and what changes when you hand the question to an AI.
Where it came from
The animal-type shorthand grew up in K-pop and drama fandoms in the 2010s as a friendly way to describe visual "vibes" without ranking anyone. It caught on because it does something a beauty score can't: it captures the impression a face gives, in one word, and it's a compliment in every direction. Nobody is a worse animal. Magazines and variety shows picked it up, and "what's your animal face type" became a standard question, first answered by friends, then by quizzes, now by AI tests.
The main types
- Dog face (강아지상). Round, slightly drooping eyes, soft eyebrows, a face that seems to smile even at rest. The impression is warm, friendly, approachable.
- Cat face (고양이상). Eyes that tilt upward at the outer corners, sharper lines through the cheek and jaw, a cool default expression. The impression is elegant, a little aloof, striking.
- Fox face (여우상). Long, narrow eyes, high cheekbones, a pointed chin. Reads as clever and charismatic.
- Rabbit face (토끼상). Round cheeks, wide innocent eyes, and often prominent front teeth when smiling. Reads as cute and youthful.
- Deer face (사슴상). Large, glossy eyes and delicate features on a slim face and neck. Reads as gentle and graceful.
- Bear face (곰상). A broad face, small kind eyes, and a sturdy overall impression. Reads as reliable and calm.
- Dinosaur face (공룡상). A long face with a strong jaw, wide mouth, and large features. Once a joke, now celebrated as a distinctive, memorable look.
- Hamster face (햄스터상). Full cheeks and a small mouth. Reads as adorable.
Two or three features do most of the work: the tilt of the eyes (down = dog, up = cat, narrow = fox), the roundness of the cheek and chin (round = rabbit or hamster, long = dinosaur), and the resting expression.
Why the system works
It works the way caricature works. Each animal type is a direction away from the average face: exaggerate the eye tilt and you move toward cat; exaggerate the roundness and you move toward rabbit. People are very good at reading those directions, which is why friends usually agree about someone's type even though nobody is measuring anything. What changes when an AI answers
